Bone mineral density test (BMD) / Dual energy X- ray Absorptiometry ( DEXA)

A bone mineral density test use X- ray to measure the amount of minerals – likely – CALCIUM in your bone . This test is important for people .who are risk for osteoporosis specially women and older adult.

  It an important test for osteoporosis ,which is the most common types of bone disease .Osteoporosis cause your bone tissue to become thin and frail over time and leads to disabling fracture .

HOW  IT IS PERFORMED ?

Bone minerals density is radiology test .This is a special type of test . It measures bone bell of  strength .This test is done when doctor feels that the patient is suffering from bone weakness.

A Bone mineral density test is pain less and required no medication . You simply alien in a table while the test is performed . they have the right equipment. Otherwise you may be sent to specialized testing facility .

Before scan technician tell us to removed all ornament like jewelry or metallic things . before scanning if any screw ,plate implants in our body you have to tell us . patient before scan stop 24 -48 hrs. calcium supplement and avoid the scan done in any contrast media taking likely MRI ,CT CONTRAT.

To do this test we need 15-20 minutes . it does not even require special preparation 

   There are TWO types of bone minerals density test

  1. CENTAR DEXA

  This scan involves lying on table while an x- ray machine scan. your Hip, Spine , Forearm and other bone of test .

  • PERIHERAL DEXA

               This scan examines the bone of your forearm , wrist joint , finger and hill.

WHEN SHOULD YOU DO BMD TEST ?

Your doctor may be order bone mineral density test . If the suspect that your bone are becoming weakness. Your displaying symptoms of osteoporosis or you have the reached the age when preventive screen necessary.

The national institute of health (NIH) Recommend that the following people get preventive check up for bone mineral density

  •  Women’s age 60 yrs or more than 
  • Men 70 yrs or more than 
  • Women of menopausal age with risk factor
  • Post menopausal  women under age 65 with risk factor

A Bone mineral density test may also be necessary if you have the following .

  1. An X- ray of your spine showing a break or bone loss in your spine .
  2. Back pain with possible break in your spine
  3. Height loss of  ½  inch or more within one yrs .

RISK OF BONE MINERAL DENSITY TEST ?

However, the radiation level of the test are very low . expert agree that the risk passed by this radiation expossor is far lower. than the risk of not detecting osteoporosis .before you get a bone fracture .

RESULT REVIEW

Your Bone mineral density result are prepared using T- Score and Z Score  shows how much your bone density is higher or lower than the bone density of a healthy , 30 yrs old adult a health care provides looking at the lower T-Score to diagnosed Osteoporosis .

    The NIH offer the following guidelines of bone mineral density

  • Normal : – between  1 To -1
  • Low bone mass (osteopenia ):  -1 To -2.5
  • Sever Osteoporosis  :  -2.5 To above
